"I’m not really an adventurer... I just like hugs."
What better way to receive a warm embrace than travelling round the world meeting new and interesting people? Helping those who need it and receiving hospitality, love, and the odd life saving gesture in return. Making friends for life with those living on another side of the world (in every sense – not just geographically)..
I love people. I love colour. I love bicycles...
Riding a racing bike took me around the world racing for Great Britain. A mountain bike took me to the world championships in Hawaii. My touring bike, the beautiful Shirley, took me 15,000km and half way round the world to India where I taught at a school in the jungle. I spun my legs and each mile I covered £1 went to charity. Unlike planes, trains and automobiles; cycling opens the world up to you, not just the cities. You get to places slowly but the most exciting doors take longer to open.
I now own 7 bicycles. A unicycle, a penny farthing (my personal favourite), a recumbent, Shirley, a snow bike, a rickshaw and a tandem. Is it any coincidence that there is also 7 continents? No, I didn’t think so. It is their fate, their destiny, each one belongs to one continent. They just need to chat amongst themselves, squabble and work out which belongs to which. (I do hope the snow bike doesn’t choose Africa).
Meanwhile, filled with joy and happiness, it is time to think about those less fortunate than me and maybe you. I have an initiative that I hope will raise 1 million pounds for charity in the coming year, have set up my own charity, deVELOpment “Empowering and educating through cycle related sports”, and am striving to get a placement in a leading UK charity for a small period.
This is my blog. Join my adventure. Share your hug. And smile with all your might.
